Power Quality Services

Description

Power Quality Services for Transmission Systems

Electric utilities are facing increasingly stringent voltage stability limits due to scarce generation resources, extensive use of transmission equipment, greater numbers of voltage-sensitive loads, and greater urban heat islands— which result in more small motor loads such as found in residential air conditioners. Exacerbating the problem is the increasing use of capacitor banks for reactive power compensation, and the need to place reactive devices closer to the loads in large, congested city areas.

S&C offers power quality services that can resolve these issues. Our transmission planning team includes some of the industry’s leading experts in power quality. They understand the nuances associated with capacitor bank and reactor switching, voltage stability, flicker, power factor correction, and short-circuit interruption.

  • An S&C transmission planning and voltage support study will determine the optimum ratings and placement of reactive-power support devices such as shunt capacitors and reactors, static and adaptive VAR compensators, and inverter-based reactors. These studies are performed using Siemens-PTI’s PSS/E, GE’s PSLF, and ATP alternative transient programs.

  • S&C’s transmission planning team also offers a variety of other analytical studies, including load-flow studies, transient and dynamic stability studies, flicker studies, short-circuit studies, protective-device coordination studies, switching transient studies, and harmonic studies.
  • S&C is experienced in modeling Flexible AC Transmission Systems. We can determine how a FACTS device will perform in the transmission system

  • S&C can provide equipment recommendations too, such as an S&C PureWave AVC® Adaptive VAR Compensator or PureWave DSTATCOM® Distributed Static Compensator, described on pages 30 and 31.

Power Quality Services for End Users

S&C’s power quality services can resolve voltage and flicker problems at commercial and industrial facilities.

  • To evaluate the impact of voltage sags, interruptions, motor starting, and/or flicker on end-user equipment, S&C can perform on-site monitoring, as well as voltage regulation and voltage control analysis. These studies often involve development of detailed equivalent circuits of the power system and the mitigation device under consideration, for simulation using the Alternative Transients Program, Siemens¬PTI’s PSS/E, or GE’s PSLF.

  • A power quality analysis study often leads to recommendation of a dynamic voltage restorer, uninterruptible power supply system, superconducting magnetic energy storage system, flywheel energy storage system, source-transfer system, or static or adaptive VAR compensator. Equipment recommendations may include an S&C PureWave System, as described on pages 28 through 31

Power Quality Project Management

  • S&C’s highly trained, experienced staff can assist your project team in areas such as project management, construction management, engineering, and testing— working closely with them to assure on-time completion of your project.

  • S&C can complete your project on a turnkey basis, in which case we’ll take full responsibility for ensuring that all steps are completed in accordance with your plans and specifications.

Other Power Quality Services

  • S&C can provide 24-hour/day, 7-day/week monitoring of your PureWave System and alert you to any problems that might affect system operation or availability, and furnish recommendations for their resolution. We’ll provide a summary of all system operations so you’ll have a record of power disturbances from which your facilities have been protected.

  • S&C is uniquely qualified to provide a wide range of maintenance and troubleshooting services for your PureWave System. Our engineers and technicians have extensive training and field experience, and work closely with the product designers. S&C offers service contracts ranging from annual preventative maintenance to emergency response.
